Our work here at Carson Design Associates centers around spaces that are beautiful, functionable, and intriguing. For The Whit project in Indianapolis, we had the opportunity to not only create a community space for a fun and accessible downtown Indianapolis apartment building, but to design model units for potential tenants.
Successful designs for a highly used apartment space concerns itself with more than just the visual or ambient enhancement; it seeks to optimize and harmonize the uses to which the built environment will be put. This type of work responds to changes in living situations, local community and business goals of an organization. The Whit project was no exception.
Located where the old Indy Star building once sat, this luxury apartment space features clean, contemporary lines and simple layouts that suit multi-generational living. Amenities are endless with covered parking, shared community space, Wework business center, conference room space, fitness center, recreation room, rooftop pool, sundeck and lounge, courtyard with grills and fire pit, and a pet park alongside a dog washing station! Whether you’re a millennial seeking the buzz and excitement of living steps away from Mass Ave., or an empty-nester looking to downsize and find a quiet but enjoyable environment, the Whit has it all.
Our part in designing spaces for The Whit had two parts: creating model units and enhancing a shared community space. Creating the model units involved us envisioning three unique layout possibilities for over 40 different types of units offered in the building. We wanted tenants to not just read the total square footage, but to see for themselves the possibilities available to them when considering The Whit as their next home. We, as a commercial interior design firm, don’t shy away from projects of this scale, as we know needs can be great when serving large groups in the community. Models give everyone the freedom to place themselves directly in the room and create their own experience.
The process of designing the community space was also intriguing for us as it involved serving not only people, but pets! Part of the community space was dedicated to an open run space for dogs, which is important for a downtown pet-owner. The enclosed park allows dog owners to unleash and let their canines jump over and under small obstacles. Located just off the dog park is a dog washing station where owners can keep their furry friends clean.
The other areas of the shared community space required furniture that could move and serve varying needs for tenants.Whether there was a baby shower or friendly card game, we ensured all parties could meet and move with ease. The final touches placed in the entrance of The Whit included mesh ceiling hangings in a symbolic Yin and Yang “S” shape, digital wall coverings, and an instagram-worthy neon sign saying, “Everything is Better Whit You.” These personal touches assisted in breaking up a large room and bringing balance.
